REGISTRY TYPES

One health standard. Four pathways in.

Every ITBR registry type requires DNA health testing for all breeding animals. What differs is the heritage documentation required and what the resulting certificate looks like.

THE FOUR TYPES

Each registry type explained

Click through to each registry's dedicated page for full requirements forms and the fee information.

FR - Full Registry

Full Registry Pedigree

For animals with at least 4 generations of fully verified, traceable breeding heritage, either through ITBR itself or transferred from a recognised breeding organisation which is accepted by ITBR

Example

A Labrador Retriever registered with MDBA. The owner joins ITBR, completes the Orivet health panel and transfers the pedigree. Future litters from two Full pedigree main registered parents are also eligible for Full Registry pedigree's.

Entry requirements at a glance

  • Pedigree from a recognised organisation (minimum 4 generations) OR both parents are already on ITBR Full Registry Main Register

  • All Applicable compulsory DNA health tests completed for both parents before any matings

  • Microchip registered with relevant state/territory companion animal registry

  • Genetic compatibility confirmed before litter registration is processed

  • Stud agreement submitted if breeder does not own both parents

Certificates issued

  • Full registry pedigree (if both parents are full registered) showing 4 generations of ancestry for the offspring. Highlights their ITBR number, microchip number, register type and breeders details

  • ITBR health certificate highlighting what diseases the parents were tested for and their results.

ER - Extension Registry

Extension Registry Pedigree

For animals that are clearly purebred but have fewer than 5 generations of traceable heritage within ITBR. Heritage may be partially document (pedigree from a non-recognised body) or verified entirely through DNA breed composition testing.

Example

A Border Collie from working dog lines with no formal papers. An Orivet DNA test confirms 96% Border Collie heritage. Combined with a vet certificate and breed photographs, she enters as an Extension Generation 1. Her offspring breed progressively towards Full Registry over the next 5 generations.

Entry requirements at a glance

  • Pathway 1: Extension pedigree from a recognised organisation OR Pathway 2: DNA breed composition test confirming purebred heritage (dogs)

  • Vet certificate of breeding suitability (animals 12+ months, issued within 6 months)

  • 5 Photographs: both sides, front, rear and overhead (Pathway 2 animals older than 12 months of age)

  • All applicable compulsory DNA health tests completed

  • Read through the Breeders Registration Guide for more information

  • Offspring generation = lower generation parent + 1 (e.g. Gen 2 dam + Gen 4 sire = Gen 3 offspring)

Certificates issued

  • Extension registry pedigree showing ancestry for the offspring (1-4 generations). Highlights their ITBR number, microchip number, register type and breeders details

  • ITBR health certificate highlighting what diseases the parents were tested for and their results.

HC - Heritage Certificate

Heritage Certificate

For first-generation crosses of two registered purebred parents of different breeds, where both parents hold Full or Extension Registry pedigrees with ITBR. This is not a pedigree - it is a document highlighting their ancestry and their parents health testing.

Example

A Poodle (FR-M) is mated with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (ER-M). Both parents have completed their breed specific health panels. The resulting litter receive a Heritage Certificate and ITBR health certificate. All offspring are sold on a limited registry - pet only.

Entry requirements at a glance

  • Both parents must hold Full or Extension Registry pedigrees on the Main Register with ITBR

  • Both parents must be of different recognised breeds

  • Health tests completed for both parents covering conditions for both base breeds

  • Genetic compatibility checked against conditions relevant to both breeds

  • All offspring placed on the Limited Register - no exceptions, no upgrades possible

  • All offspring will be called the mix of their parents no a design labelled breed (e.g. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dam and Poodle sire will be labelled as such not as a Cavoodle, if wanting a designer label dog name it must be through the developing breed pathway highlighted below)

Certificates issued

  • Heritage certificate showing the ancestry for the offspring. Highlights their ITBR number, microchip number, register type and breeders details

  • ITBR health certificate highlighting what diseases the parents were tested for and their results.

DB - Developing Breed

Developing Breed Registration

For breeders undertaking a structured, multi-generation cross-breeding program with the documented intention of developing a new recognised breed. Requires formal committee approval before any breeding begins. Annual progression reports are compulsory.

Entry requirements at a glance

  • Submit application to create a developing breed program - committee review within 20 business days

  • No breeding may begin until written committee approval is received

  • All parent animals registered on Full or Extension Pedigree Main Register

  • Annual Developing Breed Progression Report submitted by 31st of July each year (late fees apply)

  • New participants must submit an application to join a developing breed program and receive animals on the main register

Example

A group of breeders submits an application to develop a new low-shedding herding dog. The plan details parents breeds, health testing, gene pool strategy and recognition criteria. On approval all offspring carry Developing Breed Certificates until the breed achieves Full Recognition.

Certificates issued

  • Developing breed pedigree showing the ancestry for the offspring. Highlights their ITBR number, microchip number, register type and breeders details

  • ITBR health certificate highlighting what diseases the parents were tested for and their results.
